Quilts Journals, Notebooks and Diaries Solange, Albert and Marcel

‘Quilts'
The personal nature of old patchwork quilts holds a fascination for me and has for some time now provided a stimulus
for much of my work. I am intrigued by the textures and layers of the fabrics, of stories of faded remnants of love-letters
found stitched into linings and of the private history that each quilt must have.

‘Journals, Notebooks and Diaries'
Like the quilt series, these works all imagine a glimpse into past lives. Incorporating fragments of old letters, documents
and found objects, they are sometimes simply entitled after the place in which they were collected.

‘Solange, Albert and Marcel'
These three characters from 1920s Paris were invented after several trips to France when the documents and objects I
was collecting seemed to be asking to be woven into a story!
It began with Solange and Albert meeting in the Rue Mouffetard, where Solange, a dressmaker, had her studio, and
where Albert, a botanist, stayed when taking plant samples from his travels to the Botanic Gardens. The first exhibition
was entitled ‘Albert and Solange: A Romance'
When I learned about the ‘Bal Musette'… held at the back of cafes where embossed tokens were bought for the dances,
I added Marcel, an accordionist, to the story. I managed to find some original music and even a dance token. When a
laser-cutter was introduced into the Print Workshop in Dundee, I used this for some of my work. All the tokens in the
pictures are laser cut. The exhibition including Marcel is entitled ‘Trois Amis'. All the works are designed to stand
alone. Obviously as work has been purchased the exhibitions have changed and the three characters have taken on a
life of their own!
